Science Tokyo MEXT Scholarship 2027: Fully Funded Masters and PhD in Japan, Deadline 22 November

Japan is paying for your masters and PhD, and applications close on 22 November 2026.

Students across Asia and around the world can now apply for the Science Tokyo MEXT Scholarship 2027 at the Institute of Science Tokyo, through the International Graduate Program (A), known as IGP(A). Science Tokyo recommends a limited number of outstanding students to Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) for a fully funded scholarship for Fall 2027 entry.

What the scholarship covers

Successful MEXT scholars receive a full tuition and enrollment fee waiver, a monthly stipend of JPY 147,000 during the masters stage and JPY 148,000 during the doctoral stage, and economy airfare to and from Japan under MEXT conditions. Programs are taught in English across 14 departments in science, engineering, materials, life science, and environment and society, and there is no Japanese language requirement.

Who can apply

IGP(A) offers an integrated masters to doctoral pathway that combines both degrees in three to five years, as well as a masters program in selected departments. Applicants need a GPA of 2.30 out of 3.00 or higher in their most recent degree, English proficiency at B2 level or above, and must be age 34 or younger on 1 April 2027. Your research field should connect to your previous studies, and you must secure a supervisor consent letter before you apply.

Key dates

The supervisor consent letter is due on 15 November 2026. The full application closes on 22 November 2026 at 23:59 Japan time. Admission results are announced on 3 March 2027. Because the consent letter comes first, contact a supervisor now instead of waiting for the final week.
