Wellington Doctoral Scholarship 2026: Funded PhD in New Zealand, Applications Close 1 November

A funded PhD in New Zealand closes this Sunday, and it is one of the most accessible doctoral scholarships in the world right now.

The Wellington Doctoral Scholarship at Victoria University of Wellington supports students starting a first full time Doctorate (PhD) in any discipline. It is open to graduates of any university, in New Zealand or overseas, in any subject area. Around 110 scholarships are awarded every year, which makes this a realistic target for strong applicants, not a lottery ticket.

What the scholarship covers: a stipend of NZ$32,000 per year, plus domestic tuition fees, for up to three years. Scholarships are awarded on academic merit. Applicants would normally be expected to have completed a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with academic distinction equivalent to a First Class Honours degree at a New Zealand university, and to show a strong academic record, excellent academic references, or demonstrated potential for high quality research. The scholarship is only available to students seeking their first doctoral qualification. A doctoral thesis of at least 90 points is required.

Deadline: this round closes on Sunday 1 November 2026 at 4:30 PM New Zealand time. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted, so submit early. The university advises applicants of the outcome within 6 to 8 weeks of the closing date. If you miss this round, the scholarship runs three rounds a year, closing 1 March, 1 July and 1 November.
