Science graduates in Asia and around the world, this is one of the strongest fully funded PhD offers open right now, and it closes on 15 November 2026.
The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology, known as OIST, is a graduate university in Okinawa, Japan. Its five year PhD program in science is taught entirely in English, has no departments in the traditional sense, and begins with research rotations across different units, so your work can cross disciplines from the start.
Every admitted student is funded. Tuition is covered, and financial support starts at about ¥2.6 million a year and rises as you progress. OIST admits only about 60 PhD students a year from all nationalities, which keeps supervision close and the research community small and international.
Who can apply? You need a bachelor’s or a master’s degree, or to be completing one before your enrollment date. There is no written entrance exam. Shortlisted applicants take part in an online Admissions Workshop with interviews from 18 January to 7 February 2027, and successful applicants can start on 1 May 2027, 1 September 2027 or 1 January 2028. Your statement of purpose is a maximum of 800 words. If your previous degree was not taught in English, you need a TOEFL iBT or IELTS score from the last two years, and there is no minimum score. The application fee is ¥5,000, and it is not refundable.
Here is the detail that decides many applications: you cannot submit until at least two recommendation letters, from professor level faculty, have already arrived in the application system. Letters from lab members or postdocs do not count. If you are applying, message your referees today and give them the 15 November deadline in Japan time, because Japan is ahead of most of the world and the portal closes at 11:59 PM Japan time.
